An Evening with the Stars - March 8th PDF Print E-mail
ImageOur chairman, Jim Mehta writes: Members attended an Evening with the Stars meeting at Greenwich which commenced with a planetarium show hosted by one of the Greenwich astronomers, giving us a tour of the night time sky and what to look for at this time of year. We then went to see the 28-inch refractor in the dome, where Dr John Griffiths gave us a talk and presentation on the history of the telescope at Greenwich and its move to Herstmonceux and then final move back to Greenwich. One of our members, Tony Sizer, explained the telescope mechanism, and as it was too cloudy to observe, he then showed some library video of images taken through the telescope. Altogether a very enjoyable and educational visit and thanks to all the folks at Greenwich for putting on events like this.

Future Events

A D.I.Y. Starbecue - 5th July 2008
We will again be holding a D.I.Y. Starbecue at Rick's House on Saturday 5th July from about 12:00 noon.

This is a co-operative event, with everyone bringing something. Rick has a few garden chairs and a small barbecue. The Society (thanks to the coffee fund) will supply:

  • Some rolls, butter, barbecue sauce, ketchup, charcoal, and so on.

We will need:

  • A few more garden chairs.  Please bring one (or a few) with you if you can.
  • A couple of garden tables. Please can the usual suspects can bring theirs?
  • One (or two?) more barbecue(s). Another thing for the usual suspects...
  • Something to eat. Here everyone can help by bringing something, but not too much. If everyone brings twice as much as they can eat then we end up with lots of left-overs. You could bring:
    • Something to cook on the barbecue
    • or something to eat cold
    • which could be a salad
    • or something sweet
    • or ...
  • Something to drink. We'll have water and (hopefully) plenty of ice, some juice and squash, and tea and coffee. The rest is up to you.
We will start gathering at Rick's place from about 12:00 noon and we hope we'll have things cooking by 1:00 pm.

The Sun, Moon and Planets - 9th July

The Society will be holding a special observing meeting for members and the public on Wednesday 9th July at the BEECHE (Nature Centre) at High Elms, beginning at 7:00pm. There will be a talk if the weather is cloudy.

Watch the Sun set through a Solar telescope, and then the Moon and some of the planets as they rise into the evening sky.

Suitable for children. Please wear warm clothes and shoes, and bring a digital camera if you wish to take pictures through the telescope.

Partial Solar Eclipse - 1st August

On Friday 1st August the UK will experience a partial eclipse of the Sun. The Society will be holding a special observing meeting for members and the public at the BEECHE (Nature Centre) at High Elms, beginning at 9:30am with a short talk.

Come and observe the eclipse through the Society's solar telescope. You may also be  able to see sunspots and prominences on the Sun's surface as the eclipse progresses.

Special Events
From time to time we arrange outings and other special events like these:

Deep Sky Camps

Recently we've held a number of weekend camps near Headcorn, where the skies are dark, and conditions can be excellent for deep sky observing and astrophotography. These usually cost about £5.00 per night* per person (which covers use of the campsite facilities and some firewood).

Outings

In recent years we have visited places like the Greenwich Observatory, The radio telescopes and historic instruments at Cambridge, and the Herschel museum in Bath.

Open Days

These have usually co-incided with relatively predictable astronomical phenomena like meteor showers, and have included observing, short lectures and demonstrations. The most recent one was in August 2003 for the National Astronomy Week.

Public Lectures & Exhibitions

A recent one of our our exhibitions was our 21st Anniversary Celebration entitled Universe Day, held at St Olave's School in Orpington in 2001 - more than 300 people turned up to see all the latest in local astronomy.

Every two or three years we hold in memory of one of our founder members and chairmen, the Kenneth Budd Memorial Lecture. So far we have held three well attended meetings. The first Kenneth Budd Memorial Lecture, in November 1998 was given by Prof. Sir Antony Hewish, who was awarded a Nobel Prize for his work on pulsars. His lecture was titled "Thirty Years of Pulsar Astronomy", and the second, in October 2000, when Ewen A. Whitaker FRAS gave a lecture titled "Fifty Years with Lunar Maps".

* Please note, "night" is a convenient way of saying "twenty-four hours, or part thereof". If you're going to come down for the day and take part in activities, but go elsewhere to sleep, we still expect you to contribute to the cost of running the event.
